Anchors Aweigh

Anchors Aweigh, my boys, Anchors Aweigh. Farewell to foreign shores, We sail at break of day, of day.
Through our last night on shore, Drink to the foam,
Until we meet once more. Here's wishing you a happy voyage home!

This morning I'm off to sea! (Really.)

Aboard the only remaining working, fully restored WWII Liberty Ship, the SS Jeremiah O'Brien, on a cruise from San Francisco to see the "mothball" fleet in Suisun Bay.

I'll have a lot to tell you when I get back, so in the meantime get out your pea coats and enjoy this little number with Fred and Ginger called Let Yourself Go from Follow the Fleet:

And if you have not entered the Tangobaby Photography Contest, this is the last weekend you can email me your choices before the drawing! Thanks to all of you who already have!

I took that photo of the Betty Grable pin-up (who also has a small role in Follow the Fleet, as does Lucille Ball--as a blonde!) the last time I was aboard the Jeremiah O'Brien. Isn't she cute?

A Tribute to Busby Berkeley?

Besides all the other amazing accomplishments and talents that my buddy Johanna has to her credit (dancer, author, director, wise woman, kitty helper, etc.), you may want to know that she is an incredible photographer and has finally started uploading her photos to flickr. (Yay.)

I've been cracking up all morning about these piggies. I don't know exactly why these photos are making me crazy, but true to form, I have been inspired to make yet another movie comparison: the fantastical extravaganzas of the Busby Berkeley musicals.

Perhaps it is the quarter that reminds me of this crazy (and crazy famous) number with Ginger Rogers in the blessed pre-Code days of Hollywood:

Ah! And the clip has PIG LATIN in it! Damn, I'm good.

ps. If you haven't seen The Gold Diggers of 1933, you should.

pps. If you want to see more piggies, go here.

Shuffle Off to Buffalo

A super fun scene that I never get tired of watching. The little part with Una Merkel and Ginger Rogers and their fruit eating is a pre-Code gem.

Now, I'm off to shuffle off to the Fillmore Street Fair. Enjoy the rest of your weekend!
