Out with the girls

Robin of Bird Tweets taking photos in Clarion Alley in the Mission.

***

I went almost immediately from days of darkness inside the Castro Theatre to full-on sunshine and hot temperatures (especially for San Francisco).

Robin and Relyn are still visiting our fair city and this is Day Two of our SF: Tangobaby style marathon. Yesterday we spent half the day in the Mission and the other half in Chinatown, by way of The Castro, the Palace Hotel and the Lower Haight. (And yes, that is a lot.)

We had Salvadorean papusas and plantains on 24th Street, dim sum on Stockton and sausages from Rosamunde's (yay!). We rode a cable car, a bus, the N-Judah and BART. And we walked. Boy did we walk. And we got much needed accupressure foot massages in Chinatown. We ate the grilled sausages at my place and watched Vertigo on the big movie screen, so they could see parts of the city we saw today (Mission Dolores and downtown) and parts of the city we will have to save for next time. We couldn't decide who was crazier: Jimmy Stewart or Kim Novak.

Today is Telegraph Hill (hoping for wild parrots), the Filbert Stairs and North Beach in general, SF MOMA to see Robert Frank and Richard Avedon, and who knows what else while we still have feet.

I'm just beside myself to see what photos Robin will get with her big camera. She has been so generous in trying to figure out how to help me use my little baby one. I'm inspired to save money and get a real SLR and lenses like hers (but first, a job must come). I have this feeling of anticipation in having a photographer friend I so admire take photos of the places I've come to love so much, and then see them through her eyes. I know her work is going to be incredible and cannot wait to see it.

Relyn has a perfect little camera but I have a feeling she'll be getting a bigger one soon! We've got to have some sort of camera fever that is contagious.

Both of them are more wonderful to hang out with than you might even imagine. Robin is fearless and strong with her camera. I really admire her passion and pursuit of the image and how generous she is to share her enthusiasm and her wealth of knowledge. Relyn is bubbling over with humor and laughter and pure enjoyment where ever she is. She wants to do and see everything, and appreciates all she sees. I am enjoying them both tremendously.

I had more fun watching them take photos of the places I love, but here are a few images I took yesterday that I like.

Okay, time to prepare for another day.

Looks like fun - shooting with friends is great...

Don't recognize that alley, though...

Oh, I wish I could be a little bird sitting on your shoulder and soaking in the days with you, Robin, and Relyn. What a special time of shared joy and cameras. Cameras seem to open up worlds we didn't notice before. I love following tangobaby and also Robin's and Relyn's blogs.

Oh how much fun! Robin and Relyn are so lucky to have you and Dutchbaby as tourguides! And yes, lenses will open new worlds for your photography!

Ooh...let's see, Jimmy Stuart or Kim Novak? I'll be honest. I think they're equals in the batty contest. That movie is unbelievable. It really is. I've had that conversation before, though. We couldn't decide.

Anyway, it sounds like you're having a grand ole time exploring, eating, and walking...all my favorite things! Hope today is fantastic as yesterday was. : ) Have a great time!

ps - I really like that first photo of yours.

gorgeous shots - and, in the words of dorothea lange - it's not the camera, it's the photographer a SLR is nice (I have two) but you get fabulous stuff too.

Robin looks all-business doesn't she? Very daunting!!! :)
But see how good your image of her is? I think you have nothing to worry about, although buying new cameras will help stimulate the economy! :)

Jimmy Stewart was crazier; Kim Novak was just very good at what she did.

Looks like fun & Lordy, y'all can eat!

What great fun -- a hermit like me always enjoys seeing and hearing about what "normal" people do...

I'll have to check out Robin and Relyn's blogs.

Dear Julie,

We just left you an hour ago and finally found some wi-fi. What's the first thing we did? Visit you, of course. Robin has bad computer karma right now, so hello from both of us. We vote you the best photo walk tour guide ever.

Dang those steps were great!! Robin says they left her breathless and I agree. We'll have to let everyone else guess why we're breathless. Must have been the view. (pabt, pant)

computer karma is back on track... i am still breathless from the stairway to heaven hike today. i have got to say i cannot think of one funny or dry remark tonight. i think relyn must have used up al the humor oxygen here in the Laundromat we are using for wifi. yes Laundromat. we were desperate or a visit. i'm gonna have to go back to the apartment and get some sleep. looking for parking this morning for over an hour on top of all that stair 'stepin has plain tuckered me out.

xox night darlin'

Now I want a footrub and some food. That camera is HUGE! My daughter just went to SF for the first time two weeks ago and loved it! You live in a beautiful city!

I love "Vertigo", especially the part where Kim Novak's hair is perfect right after she fell into The Bay. I wish I was there for the movie, the steps, and the parrots. I will have to ask you to escort me for a parrot walk one of these days.

Wasn't it fun having Robin and Relyn here?

I am completely envious. I want to spend a day photographingg with you in your amazing city. Speaking of your amazing city, when I'm college shopping, I will deffinitly be looking in your area. I think putting 3000 miles between me and my hick town would do a world of good!
