Sometimes it takes so little...

...to make a person happy.

Sometimes I wonder why it is so hard for those of us who have so much?

Meet Chewie, Little Fluff and Patricia.

If you are around Polk Street @ California, you might see them on the corner. Give them a dollar or two if you can. Stop and pet the cats for a moment. They love company and a kind word.

More later but I'm so dog tired. I wish I had someone who could take dictation and type my blog for me. Any takers?

***

Long story very very short, I was in a boutique today with someone who will be featured in i live here:SF very soon. She said to the boutique owner that I'm a photographer and the woman said, "Hey, you want to have a show here?"

Just like that.

Could it really be that easy?

Yes. I guess it can.

More on that too if there's something to tell.

day by day

K and baby M say hello.

***

This will be a short update about K and then I hope to have more of a story to share with you soon.

On Thursday night, I spent quite a long time printing out so many incredibly moving and encouraging letters for K to read. The timing could not have been better.

On Friday afternoon, over a shared sandwich in a cafe downtown, she told me how sad and lonely she'd been feeling that day. Which is so understandable, given her circumstances. I gave her an orange folder thick with your letters. When I started to tell her about how the notes of love and hope were flooding into my email box, we both started to cry over our lunch plates.

I told her that the next time she feels sad and lonely, to read those letters because so many of you hold her and the kids in your hearts. Truly, I don't know yet what to make of all of this-- it just dawned on me yesterday that it has only been a week since I saw K and the kids on the street. I have learned so much since then and can only see more and more how good people everywhere become present when you need them.

People like you.

***

Normally if I ever "regifted" a present to me, I would never admit it publicly and certainly never tell the person who had given me the gift, but the little purse you see above holds part of the donations that you so generously have been sending in.

I did not want to hand her a plain envelope. I remembered this vibrant, beautiful little purse that Tara had given me the last time she visited San Francisco. When I told K that this purse was a gift from a special and talented lady in Paris, who had also taken the time to write her a letter of encouragement and love that was in the orange folder, I think she just couldn't believe what was happening.

Surely I am almost having a hard time believing it myself.

***

She is not out of the woods yet. Not by a long shot. The most important thing of all is to get a regular roof over her head. I worry that the money may run out before a shelter becomes available but for now I will not think of that. We have some breathing room.

And it is all thanks to you.

More soon. xoxo

ps.: Again, I must apologize that I've not been able to answer your individual requests and questions about donations, clothing sizes, etc. I still have not had enough time to ask K all the myriad of important questions I need to, and also be there just to listen to her. And then to find the time back here at my desk. But I thank you all for your patience. Soon you will hear from me about whatever it was you needed to know. But don't stop writing and asking.

Good Morning, Sleepyheads!

“You have to have a dream so you can get up in the morning.” ~ Billy Wilder

***

Now I love Billy Wilder even more, because he gives such great quote. But of course he does. Billy was brilliant.

You know where I'll be today. I don't know where you'll be but I'll be thinking of you!

Happy Free Friday! San Francisco and I wish you a lovely day!

xoxo

Better than I could have imagined...

Meet Kathryn.
I don't want to give anything else away... you should read her for yourself.

***

I had the hardest time picking out which photo to use for her post on i live here: SF.

There were so many possibilities. And then I read her story and knew which one was best. This project is amazing me, but it's not the project. It's the people.

Happy Tired, Tired Happy

"Happiness often sneaks in through a door you didn't know you left open." ~ John Barrymore

The MOO cards came for my new blog. Everything seems better when you've got a MOO card to share.

***

But I've got to cool my heels.

What happens when you "put it out there," tell people what you want to do (and it appears to be going in the right direction) is exhilarating. I'm so excited and happy right now that it's made me so pooped I can't even write it all down. It's like when you played all day and didn't take your nap and you're happy tired.

***

My first photo for my i live here: SF project has gone somewhat viral on flickr. I've never had 200+ views of any photo... and already have several photoshoots lined up. Next Free Friday is already booked.

And the Shy Kitten poster went to the kindergarten class.

I got a bunch of notes and drawings from the kids who loved that photo so much in the Chinatown book. Just think what they'll do when MJ puts the poster on the wall.

And I met old friends and new. Friends are just popping out all over!

And some Boy left me a little treat tonight.

I wish this post was more coherent. This is all I can do right now. Love to you.

xoxo

about last night

I feel decidedly unglamorous this morning in my sweats and fuzzy socks.

But now I have proof that last night I looked a whole lot better.

Thank you, Jennifer, for capturing the magic inside and outside of your beautiful tango studio.

(Look, you can even see the Transamerica Pyramid in the background, and a little bit of the Bay Bridge.)

A Three Advil Night

It's been a long time since I last prayed to Goddess Advil.

***

Tonight the red shoes came out, and yeah, it is like riding a bicycle.
You never forget.

You never forget how the music fills your ears and you dance with your eyes closed for minutes upon minutes. How your hair gets sweaty and sticks to your forehead and the side of your face, where it's pressed against the face of someone else. How you can't help humming the melodies, laughing when you make a mistake. Milongas, valses, tangos.

***

Tonight at Ney and Jennifer's.
Music, color, art and friends.
The three most favoritest people I could ever wish to dance with, this being my debut for 2009 and the first day back on the dance floor in many moons.

They didn't forget me!

xoxo to my lovely friends: R, P and T.
You made me feel like a princess, thank you.

ps.: And I got to ride the cable car there and back. Now that's what I call San Francisco Tango.

Inauguration Morning in San Francisco

This morning. San Francisco's beautiful City Hall in the early morning light.

As the crowd grew larger behind us, spreading out to the sides, everyone so full of anticipation.

And then it was his moment. Our moment.

Finally. Finally.

Finally.

***

I can't say more than what you already feel inside, so we can just enjoy the feelings together.

One thing that was wonderful and creative and perfect to share was this, though. People inscribing their wishes and hopes for our new president.

1000 Origami Peace Cranes on canvas.

Up close, you could not make out the image as easily.

I got a chance to make my small mark on a spot of canvas.

And then the moment had arrived.

The canvas was turned and uplifted.

A Cupcake and a Very Happy Birthday to My Crush, Joe

"I was in the Oval Office the other day, and the President asked me what I would do about resignations. I said, 'Look, Mr. President, would I keep Rumsfeld? Absolutely not.' And I turned to Vice President Cheney, who was there, and I said, 'Mr. Vice President, I wouldn't keep you if it weren't constitutionally required.'

I turned back to the President and said, 'Mr. President, Dick Cheney and Don Rumsfeld are bright guys, really patriotic, but they've been dead wrong on every major piece of advice they've given you. That's why I'd get rid of them, Mr. President---not just Abu Ghraib.' They said nothing. Just sat there like big old bullfrogs on a log and looked at me." ~ Joe Biden, Rolling Stone interview, June 2004

***

Fucking A. That's my Veep. And he's a Scorpio!

d i a n a m u s e, we should be celebrating together. Red Velvet cupcake, anyone? Happy Happy Birthday, Joe.

ps.: Cupcake photo swiped from that leftist liberal rag, the New York Times. Hey, at least they give you the recipe. Aw hell, I got the Biden photo there, too. I'm so transparent. (I read the International Herald Tribune sometimes too. But not The Economist. No one reads that except for Sarah Palin.)

Princesses Nubiennes

I'm still waking up in a good mood. My post-election high hasn't worn off yet! Amazing.

This is a song that will keep it going. Temperature Rising by Les Nubians. I will never be as cool or beautiful as these ladies, but boy I can sure appreciate them.

My musical educator in London, a cuban in london, has the most wonderful musical selections with great commentary. You should give him a visit.

Happy Friday!

As if...

Life just couldn't get any sweeter right now.

Next Tuesday is my birthday. So as an early birthday present to me, this Tuesday I get a president that makes me feel like the world might not be going to hell in a handbasket and I'm thrilled in a way I've never been in my entire life, and then...

My sister goes and HAS A BABY today!

Little Curly Girl has a brand new sister who apparently has a flawless complexion and lots of dark curly hair... and I have someone new to play with.

My goodness, I think my head is going to fall off.

YAY!

8 p.m., Pacific Standard Time

Election Night.
At 8 p.m., the room exploded with joy.
Inside The Independent, Divisadero Street, San Francisco.

***

Like a lot of you, I'm really tired today. But it's a different kind of tired. I'm thrilled to be tired. I've destroyed my vocal cords from cheering (but my voice does sound damn sexy, kind of like Kathleen Turner in her prime) and the palms of my hands still hurt a little from clapping.
My eyes are puffy from crying.

But it's all good. I wouldn't want to be any other way today.

I think this is when I started to go a little nuts.

OHIO! And Florida! And Virginia!
I had it easy. I live in a slam-dunk state. But the people who got the word out, who stood in long lines, who live in parts of the country where making this leap of faith is a HUGE deal...

YOU are my heros. Truly. Thank you.

***

"If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible; who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time; who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer." ~ President Elect Barack Obama

Once I got outside of The Independent, I saw this flyer just a block away while heading towards home.

I've always felt that I missed out in the great moments of history: the Women's Suffrage movement, the end of WWII, the Civil Rights Movement, the Kennedy Administration, the space race. Times that formed our nation's consciousness and helped make us a country that people looked up to.

I don't feel like that anymore.

The entire transcript of Obama's historic speech is here.
